Can a strategy game work in ten-minute chunks?
Strategy games and phones have an awkward relationship. Real depth usually needs time and focus, and mobile play is all interruptions. So can the two coexist? Mostly, yes, if the game is designed for it.
Tide and Tower is a good case study. Its shifting tide mechanic naturally breaks the game into phases, so you can plan during a calm stretch and put the phone down before the next wave. That rhythm suits short sessions better than I expected.
The games that fail here are the ones with no clean stopping point, where quitting mid-turn loses your progress. If you have to choose between finishing a session and getting off the train, the design has already lost.
My takeaway after a lot of testing: pick strategy games with clear phases and generous saving. Depth and short sessions can absolutely live together, they just need the developer to plan for your messy real life.
